Theme For English B by Langston Hughes
Good Afternoon Ms. Spencer's ELA class, I hope all is well. Today's task will focus on Theme For English B, by Langston Hughes which we went over in class. If you do not already have a copy please Google the poem or get it from a class mate. There should be no excuse for which anyone should not have the poem as I will also post it on this blog spot. In class we spoke about several of the themes that the poem expressed. You all came up with very good ideas just as I expected from my scholars. I want to discuss one of the themes that we came up with that I thought was relatively interesting for the topic of this poem. (Heritage Vs. Assimilation.)

I would like for all of us to have a discussion about where we come from and what aspects of our identity makes us who we are. I would like each student to answer these questions : What are the important aspects about your identity that makes you who you are? (ex. community/environment, race/ethnicity, gender/physical attributes.) Have you ever felt the need to assimilate to another culture rather than stay true to your identity, if so when? Each person must respond to at least one classmate's response.
ReplyDeleteVocabulary list: Assimilation, Heritage,Identity, and Dichotomy. Please find the definitions of these word in order to prepare for your final project. I would like for each student to use these new vocabulary words in each of their responses and projects.
ReplyDeleteFinal Project: Please type a (two paged paper double spaced, APA format, with a reference page as shown in the format handout) essay about where you or your family come from, what challenges you've faced in America, and a time where you had to assimilate to another culture instead of your own.
or
Briefly research information about Langston Hughes. Write a paragraph or two about his life story and his contribution to history. Create your own poem discussing the same topics. (Everything must be two paged double spaced...same as first option.)
or
Create a two paged comic book about the same topics. Include Mr. Hughes in your comic book and explain with writing in the bottom of each drawing. (Must contain a reference pg.)
